LANGUAGE ARTS
ACSI / Abeka Books / Plato Learning, Inc.
The Reading series focuses on practicing
and reinforcing phonics, oral language, writing, comprehension,
and vocabulary skills. The systematic skill instruction
approach encourages students to become successful readers
through the use of a strong phonics foundation. Phonemic
awareness, segmenting, blending, and decoding words
are part of the strong phonics foundation students will
gain. Students will also utilize lists of high-interest,
high-frequency words to promote spelling as a tool of
writing and reading. Instruction occurs through the
use of traditional stories and quality literature.
Students will continue practicing the formation of numbers,
lowercase, and uppercase letters in manuscript format
through the handwriting program. They will be encouraged
to write about their own experiences and use the skills
they have learned in the writing process. The language
arts curriculum mirrors the requirements as set forth
by the State of California Standard. NPLA accepts these
standards as minimum competencies and hold higher expectations
for all NPLA students.
