The language arts curriculum provides students the opportunity
to develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading,
writing, grammar, and spelling. Students are taught
how to organize and communicate their ideas appropriately
through a variety of methods and for a variety of purposes.
Third grade students will experience time-honored and
contemporary classics as well as award winning fiction
and nonfiction. They are challenged to think, raise
questions, and read critically. Fundamental phonics
and reading skills are reviewed and utilized. There
is an emphasis on sound-letter relationships to expand
the student's spelling and vocabulary ability as well
as a focus on dictionary skills.
The first semester of third grade handwriting concentrates
on the mechanics of cursive writing. This curriculum
stresses the practicing of lower case and uppercase
cursive letters while focusing on legibility, fluency
and form. Students will be applying their cursive writing
skills to written work. The language arts curriculum
mirrors the requirements as set forth by the State of
California Standards department. NPLA accepts these
standards as minimum competencies and expect our students
to not only meet but exceed the state standards across
each discipline.
