DRESS CODE
It is the desire of NORTHPOINTE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY that our students live and conduct themselves in a manner that will be pleasing to God and will glorify the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Standards for appearance are a means of building character and distinction in the lives of our students. The dress code of NORTHPOINTE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY is one of the first, and most tangible, rules of the school to which an entering student must respond. It not only affects the clothes budget, and the planning and shopping for a wardrobe, but every school day this rule visibly affects our students. It is vital that each student wholeheartedly support the dress standards.

When a student is observed by a teacher or the principal to be in violation of the dress code, the parents or legal guardian may be called, and the student may be sent home to make any needed alterations. If it is impossible for the student to go home to change, the student may be held out of class for the remainder of the day. The student’s grade for each class will reflect their absence.

If a student has been cited as “out of uniform” more than six (6) times, they will be asked to withdraw from school.

The company in which we purchase of uniforms is that of the DENNIS UNIFORM MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Click the Logo to visit their website.

• Overall shorts are not allowed.

Both Boys and Girls

• No plain white T-shirts (undershirts) are allowed when worn as a primary shirt, even under a jacket.

• Shoes must be worn at all times. Elementary students should wear shoes that support and cover the foot to facilitate active play. No sandals. (Tennis shoes style is best.) Avoid high heels or high soles for safety’s sake.

• Hats, caps and headbands (for boys) are not allowed in the building.

• Sunglasses are not to be worn in any building.

• No clothing articles, belt buckles or pins advertising other schools, secular rock groups, or that suggest lewd or improper language or lifestyles, violent characters or scenes, or gang related symbols are allowed.

• Shorts (uniform only) may be worn. These shorts may be purchased in uniform stores, in uniform departments of clothing stores, or from uniform catalogs (i.e.. Dennis Uniform, Target, JC Penny’s, Gottschalk’s, Lands End, and many others.)

• Hair should remain its natural color (no bleaching or coloring) and the style should not draw attention to the wearer.

• Jewelry should be modest.

• No extreme fads (i.e.: gang associated styles, grunge look, extra large clothing).

• Pants, skirts, or shorts should fit and be worn at the natural waistline, and must have hemmed edges.

• Pants must not drag on the ground. Hem must be sewn, not stapled, pinned, or taped.

• Clothing with rips in the fabric should be mended before being worn to school.

• Exercise or lounging wear is not appropriate to be worn (sweatpants, pajama bottoms, nylon pants).

• Students are expected to dress modestly at all school related activities and events (i.e., athletic practices and games, graduations, etc.) Dress code will be enforced at all school events.

Questions to ask about selecting clothing

• Is it immodest? (1 John 2:15-17)

• If I raise my hands above my head does my midriff show?

• Might my appearance be disruptive to learning by calling attention to itself?

• Does my appearance identify with a countercultural group or a rebellious element of society?

• Does the clothing present a health or safety hazard?|

• Is the clothing faded, worn, or improperly fitted?

• Is the design and purpose other than for school use?

* If the answer is “yes” to any of the above, then the attire or appearance is not acceptable for school.

Shoes should be worn that support the foot and facilitate active play: Please do not send your child to school in shoes that are not appropriate for kicking a ball, playing dodge ball or running a race. Footwear that does not support the foot causes accidents and injuries. (Note: This rule is not the same in the Jr. High or High School because those students are provided with locker and changing facilities so that they might change into athletic shoes before P.E.)

Oversized jewelry is inappropriate: The reasons for this rule are twofold. First, dangling earrings are dangerous for girls to wear during active play as they might catch on another child’s clothing and severe injury could result. Secondly, oversized jewelry is meant for adults and its purpose is to attract attention to the wearer. Consequently, when worn by an elementary girl, it calls much attention to her and distracts from the purpose of school- teaching and learning.

It is a mark of maturity when students can freely choose apparel that demonstrates individuality without deviating from the standards of appropriateness.

Failure to Comply:

First time: Note home to parents from principal explaining infraction, together with a copy of the entire dress code.

Second time: Note from principal. Child held in the office until parent brings clothes for the child to change into. The absence from class is considered unexcused. Children in grades.

3-6 receive a “warning” in the discipline system. Third time and beyond: Note from principal. Child held in the office until parent brings appropriate clothing to change into. Absence from class is considered unexcused. Children in grades 3-6 are given a “consequence” in the discipline system
